This two-day symposium aims to contextualize the art salon in the Arab region.
The symposium brings together researchers, curators, artists, and critics to discuss the emergence of the art salon in the region in the colonial and post-colonial context, reflect on knowledge circulations between Europe and the Middle East, and deliberate the function of the art salon within the context of a museum and its collection today.
The symposium will encourage exchanges between researchers, curators, and art critics, and build important networks that both sides will be able to draw on in the future. To disseminate the research findings, a publication will be prepared coming out of the symposium, to be published in time for the Sursock Museum’s next Salon d’Automne in November 2018.
Confirmed speakers include Amin Alsaden, Monique Bellan, Abed Al Kadiri, Yasmine Chemali, Eileen Cooper, Catherine Cornet, Nancy Demerdash-Fatemi, Alain Messaoudi, Mourad Montazami, Marie Muracciole, Camilla Murgia, Maria-Mirka Palioura, Nadia Radwan, Nora Razian, Dina Ramadan, Ghalya Saadawi, Nada Shabout, and Amar A. Zahr.
